MY TWO GRANDPAS - By Dandy Ahuruonye © 2000 - 2014

MY TWO GRANDPAS

I Have Two Grandpas Who Are Very Different. One Lives In The East And The Other Lives In The West.

Nanna In The East

My Grandpa in the East is called Nnanna. Nnanna is a very good man and lives in a small village with no electricity or running water. There are no shops or supermarkets. When Nnanna needs meat, he kills one of his chickens or goes into the bush in search for small animals. But Nnanna is happy. When his clothes get dirty he takes them to river where he washes them by hand. At times when he is not able to travel to the river, he hand washes his clothes at home, but this reduces the amount of water he has. The next day he has to cycle to the river to fetch more water. But Nnanna is very happy.
When he is hungry, he goes into the forest to fetch firewood. He uses the firewood to make open fires to cook his meals. Cooking with an open fire is very hard because of the smoke. But when his food is ready, he sits down to enjoy the meal. Nnanna is very happy.
When Nnanna gets sick, he visits a herbal doctor. The doctor gives him some medicine made out of tree leaves and resin. This type of medicine is very bitter, but it makes Nnanna get better, and by the next day Nnanna is feeling well again. Yes, Nnanna is happy.
Sometimes when his bicycle breaks down, Nnanna goes to the market on foot. He needs to save up some money before he can bring the bicycle to the repairer. His life can be hard at times, but Nnanna is very happy. Would you like to ask Nnanna any questions? He would be very happy to answer them.

Papi In The West

My Grandpa in the West is called Papi. Papi is a happy man and lives in a small town that has electricity, running water, buses, train stations, and an airport. There are also shops and supermarkets. When Papi needs meat he goes to the supermarket or the corner shop to buy some. At the shop he can choose to buy chicken, beef, pork, or lamb. Therefore, he does not need to go into the bush to search for small animals. But Papi is happy. When his clothes get dirty he puts them in the washing machine and waits for two hours before all the clothes are washed properly. Because of the washing machine, he does not need to wash his clothes by hand.  But Papi is very happy.
When he gets hungry, Papi goes to the fridge to see which type of food to choose from. In the fridge he has so much choice for his breakfast, lunch, and dinner. He uses the electric cooker or oven to prepare his meal, which is why he doesn’t need to make an open fire. The oven cooks his food very quickly, sometimes; it takes just one hour to make his dinner. The oven has no smoke, so it is very easy and comfortable for Papi to cook his meal in the oven.
But when his food is ready, oh, he sits down to enjoy it. Papi is a very happy man.
When Papi gets sick, he visits a medical doctor. The doctor gives him some tablets which he swallows down with water, milk, or fruit juice. The medicines from the doctor are not bitter, they are very easy to swallow, and makes Papi get better, and by the next day Papi is feeling well again. Yes, Papi is happy.

Sometimes when his car breaks down, Papi uses the telephone to call the car mechanic. The mechanic comes to his house and repairs his car for him. He does not need to save up some money before he can phone the mechanic because his bank pays for the repairs. His life can be very easy, which is why Papi is very happy. Would you like to ask Papi any questions? He would be very happy to answer them.
