Why Not CHRISTMAS? - By Dandy Ahuruonye © 2000 - 2014

When I observe the commotion and consumerism that is Christmas, I am at a loss trying to figure out where Christ fits in it all!!

It is noteworthy that at the workplace it is an eternal taboo; in fact it is not allowed in many a work environment to talk about religion or appear religious for eleven and a half months of the year. But then, come mid-December - BANG!

Yes, all of a sudden everyone, even those that have not managed to see a mass or hear a church sermon all year round - you see all of them are decorating their desks and stands at work with all sorts of Christmas decorations.

Food, drinks, sweets, and lights come up all over the place, yes at this time of the year everyone suddenly become very pious. To be clear, I have two issues here.

First - Where does Jesus feature in all the Christmas paraphernalia?

Second - why is it ok to be, or appear religious for just a couple of weeks of the year but a taboo during the other fifty-two or so weeks?

A truly religious Christian must follow the precepts and guidelines set out by Christ in the Bible - after all, this is supposed to be a celebration about The Christ. Therefore, why not look to him for guidance?

There is also the question of whether Christ and his followers in the First Century actually celebrated Christmas, and whether they later asked Christians to celebrate his birth. Some biblical scholars have also raised the possibility, that this celebration might have pagan origins.

Consequently, if one is truly Christian and would like to do things, like Christ, or his apostles, this person should investigate to find out if:

(1) Christ celebrated Christmas

(2) Whether he asked his followers to celebrate it,

(3) The origins of this event are Christian.

If really this is a Christian celebration supported by The Inspired Scriptures - why is it seethed in consumerism, overindulgence, overeating, and heavy drinking?

Why are pagan rituals and decorations promoted in the name of this celebration?

It is also sad to note that during this time of the year parents and families lie to young ones by telling them a bearded gift giver will bring them presents.

Would the Christ condone such values? It is very doubtful!

Therefore, when some people ask - why not Christmas? It would be quite reasonable to reply - well; why CHRISTMAS?
