Before
the first rains in March signalled the start of a new farming season, the women
had to make personal arrangements to have the bush cleared and ready for ploughing.
Everyone had to wait though for the key event of the planting season. Chief Nwàká’s
portion, which was the largest of all the pieces of farmland, had to be cleared,
ploughed, and the seeds planted on an appointed day, by all who dwelt in his compound.
It was like a festival day full of all sorts of activities as every member of the
